St. Louis Landscape Tips

March 28, 2011

This week looks like rain and snow.  It is going to be hard and to get out there and do any landscaping.  I have been noticing that the bulbs are starting to sprout and the weeds will be closely behind.  Now is the time to get a pre emergent down in your landscaping to prevent some of the unwanted weeds from germinating.

The sod installation jobs went smoothly last week.  The weather cooperated for us and the jobs were completed on time.  This week we have a retaining wall and decorative rock installation job.  The retaining wall is a stone block retaining wall with multiple tiers that will contain decorative rock and plants.  This job will take a majority of the week.  Hopefully the weather will cooperate and we will finish this project within the week and we can move on to a small block edging and decorative rock installation we have lined up.

This week started out very nice.  The weather is warm and beautiful.  This weather is perfect for the landscaping projects that we have coming up.  Now is the time to take  look at your landscaping and decide if you need any mulch, or if you need to add any decorative rock to fill in any that may have settled or washed away.  Be careful not to add to much mulch to your landscape.  If you like the look of fresh mulch then run a hard rake over your mulch areas and this will bring the mulch that is sitting under the top layer to the top and give your mulch a fresh new look.

With our retaining wall/ sod job complete we have a couple sod installation jobs lined up for this week.  This week we have a sod installation job in University City and a sod installation job in South St. Louis City.  The weather is perfect to get the ground prepared and graded for the sod.  We will be installing a tall fescue type sod.

Tips for new sod:

Since we are installing some new sod this week now would be a good time to talk about some tips for new sod in St. Louis.

Watering

Watering new sod is a must.  Water enough to keep the sod moist for the first two weeks.  The first mowing should come approximately two weeks after the sod is installed.  By this point the roots should be somewhat established into the ground.  So, you can cut back on the watering before you mow to firm the ground up.  Cut the new turf high so you don’t damage it.

I can’t believe we are getting this snow here in St. Louis.  It is hard to do any type of landscaping in the snow so our retaining wall and sod installation project is put on hold for the next couple days while we wait for this snow to melt.  The retaining wall is complete and now we need to install new dirt and sod.

Our next projects are sod installation jobs in University City and South St. Louis City.

Tips for this week:

Since we have snow it is hard to get outside and do anything in your landscapes this week.  Everything will be wet sloppy for the next couple of days.  But once this weather warms up your plants will start to grow and weeds will start to grow as well.

Now would be the time to put a pre emergent weed control on your landscape to prevent grassy weeds that may grow.

And now is also now the time to start on your next landscaping job.  St. Louis Landscapes’ schedule is filling up fast, and we would love to perform your next landscaping project.

This week St. Louis Landscapes is building a retaining wall, putting in a drainage system, a paver patio and putting new sod on a lawn in South St. Louis.

The retaining wall is being built to support a landing area from the new deck that was just built.  We are also putting in a paver patio that will give more outdoor space off the deck.

Tips for this week:

Spring is here in St. Louis!  Now is the time to start cleaning up your flowerbeds and trimming your plants.  Over the winter blowing leaves and dead twigs probably ended up in your landscaping, and now is the time to start cleaning them out.
